Required Textbook

ACSM’s Certification Review

Recommended Textbook

ACSM’s Guidelines for Exercise Testing and Prescription, 7th edition

Course Objectives

1.      This course is designed to provide exercise science students with experience in exercise testing, and a review of the requirements for certification as an ACSM Health and Fitness Instructor. The emphasis will be on submaximal exercise tests for fitness evaluation and maximal exercise tests utilized for CHD screening.

2.      Each student is required to demonstrate a level of competency which illustrates proficiency conducting an exercise test.

3.      To obtain a better awareness and understanding of graded exercise testing and the other tests, each student is required to participate as a subject. Furthermore, to obtain a passing letter grade (above an F), each student must participate as a subject at least four times for the submaximal test.

Tentative Schedule

Week 1: Class Introduction,

Week 2: Introduction to Submaximal Testing

Week 3-8: Submaximal Fitness Testing (6 weeks)

Week 9: Submaximal Fitness Test Practical Exams

Week 10-11: Flexibility, muscular strength, anthropometry

Week 12-16: Maximal Exercise Testing (5 weeks)

Course Evaluation

1.      Course evaluation will be:

40% Check marks earned in class

              20% Final exam

              40% Practical Exams

Participation as a subject is required to obtain a passing grade.

2.      A final exam will be 20% of the final grade. The final will be given on Wednesday, May 6 from 4 - 6 pm. The final will be given at the beginning of the period and then we will use the rest of the time to finish treadmill exercise testing.

3.      Check marks only will be given by the instructor. Keep a record of your check marks. To earn a check mark, a student must conduct their portion with minimal help from others, including the instructor. In other words, you must pay attention, ask questions early, and learn how to perform the task on your own. DO NOT COME TO CLASS AND JUST OBSERVE!

4.            The practical exams will test your ability to administer the submaximal fitness test, and the flexibility, muscular endurance, and body composition tests. You will be graded on your accuracy and technique. For the submaximal fitness test you will be responsible for the Test Termination criteria. You will also be responsible for administering the test and collecting heart rates, blood pressures, and RPEs.

6.      Tentative Check mark Grading Scale

There will be 30 check marks. They will be scored on a satisfactory completion basis. They will be counted in your grade as a percentage e.g. 27 check marks out of 30 will be equal to 90%. The listing below is an approximation.

7.      Attendance is required. Irregular attendance will adversely affect a student’s final course grade, primarily because of a lack of check marks. There will be no make-ups.

Emergency Procedures. Southern Illinois University Carbondale is committed to providing a safe and healthy environment for study and work. Because some health and safety circumstances are beyond our control, we ask that you become familiar with the SIUC Emergency Response Plan and Building Emergency Response Team (BERT) program. Emergency response information is available on posters in buildings on campus, available on BERT’s website at www.bert.siu.edu, Department of Safety’s website www.dps.siu.edu (disaster drop down) and in Emergency Response Guidelines pamphlet. Know how to respond to each type of emergency.

Instructors will provide guidance and direction to students in the classroom in the event of an emergency affecting your location. It is important that you follow these instructions and stay with your instructor during an evacuation or sheltering emergency. The Building Emergency Response Team will provide assistance to your instructor in evacuating the building or sheltering within the facility.
