Class Format: As part of the class we will collect data for a study on the components of performance. The class meets 15 times during the semester. We will collect data on different aspects of performance. We will also spend time discussing some topics in exercise physiology. The discussion topics are covered in an outline below. Performance tests will be completed by some of the students: VO2max, Squat and Bench press 1RM, Wingate cycle test, MART treadmill test, ventilatory threshold, vertical jump, 5 m and 10m run, and beep test. During some of the testing, blood lactates will be measured. This will be very difficult to complete, but with your help and cooperation it will be very interesting. I will explain the tests as we go. There will be assigned readings that will help familiarize you with the tests.

Evaluation: This course is a graduate-level seminar. Classroom interaction will take the form of discussion and it will be critical for you to have read the assigned articles before class time. Also, you must willingly participate in the testing as a subject and/or data collector. 60% of your final grade will be determined by 3 short essay tests that will be given week 5, 10, and 15. The remainder of your final grade will be a written take-home exam that will be distributed at the end of class on Tuesday, April 28. The take home exam must be handed in by 12:00, Wednesday, May 6, 2009.

Emergency Procedures.  Southern Illinois University Carbondale is committed to providing a safe and healthy environment for study and work.  Because some health and safety circumstances are beyond our control, we ask that you become familiar with the SIUC Emergency Response Plan and Building Emergency Response Team (BERT) program.  Emergency response information is available on posters in buildings on campus, available on BERT’s website at www.bert.siu.edu, Department of Safety’s website www.dps.siu.edu (disaster drop down) and in Emergency Response Guidelines pamphlet.  Know how to respond to each type of emergency.

Instructors will provide guidance and direction to students in the classroom in the event of an emergency affecting your location.  It is important that you follow these instructions and stay with your instructor during an evacuation or sheltering emergency.  The Building Emergency Response Team will provide assistance to your instructor in evacuating the building or sheltering within the facility.
